Where my old maps still show forests and meadows, I now have to search my way through newly industrialized areas. I sleep somewhere in the woods and have no stove to boil water for my morning tea. The next few nights I spend with friends in Wuppertal, Kaarst and Cologne. Then I visit my brother in Dusseldorf. Our last time together for a drink and reminiscing. These farewells are making me sad. In Remagen I take the train, go to Karlsruhe and then on to Stuttgart where friends are organizing a farewell party for me. I now have to pack and move my few belongings with my bike. I am becoming very familiar with my new bike “Charlotte” which rides differently than my lovely old bike I used for 11 years. But I feel very safe and secure on Charlotte. My farewell party My party takes place at a public grill park close to Karlsruhe. The day before I ride to the park and attach a notice that I would like to reserve one of the barbeques for a party of 20. Once there, I see that the 3rd grade of the elementary school also has a reservation, this should be cheerful. The next day, it is raining cats and dogs. Turns out that the weather deters the kids from having their party. In the afternoon, the rain stops. When we arrive at the park with groceries, drinks, toilet paper and barbeque coal, there is no sign of kids. A Russian-speaking family is just leaving. The park is ours. Even the mosquitoes have slowed down in the evening. Finally a bonfire burns. My friends perform a wonderful shadow theatre in the darkness. Then a farewell to my friends and my journey begins. Packing my suitcase While the German football national team wins the semi-final of the world championship with a score of 7:1, I pack my remaining things in cardboard boxes. I am packing and cleaning for two whole days. Later, in the evening I bid farewell to Daniel, Jan and family. And then on to Karlsruhe to stow away the boxes and bid final goodbyes to dear friends. With love from your fan Ilona

Preparation
With my new bicycle and 20 year-old maps I start my first tour from Minden to Remagen.

My farewell party
My party takes place at a public grill park close to Karlsruhe.

Packing my suitcase
While the German football national team wins the semi-final of the world championship with a score of 7:1, I pack my remaining things in cardboard boxes. I am packing and cleaning for two whole days. Later, in the evening I bid farewell to Daniel, Jan and family. And then on to Karlsruhe to stow away the boxes and bid final goodbyes to dear friends.

Perhaps I'll be able to attend the next one. Good luck, start safe and healthy, and may the wind always be in your back as you continue your travels.

Your travels are unbelievable. The country is beautiful in its austerity. Go ahead, listen to your body and you'll be fine. And always drink you tea. Looks like you are meeting the nicest people. Bill and I are looking forward to hearing about your next adventures. As always, may the wind be in your back and your cooker always be working. Take care my love Ilona Dearest Heikelein,
